Contact UsWhat Are FAA Class II & Class III Exams?
Are you looking to take to the skies but need to pass your certification first? The Federal Aviation Administration requires that pilots meet a set of minimum safety standards to fly and must be certified by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) to do so. Dr. Tod C. Heldridge proudly holds this title and performs FAA Class II & Class III Exams at his Southlake, TX office. Whether you need to renew your FAA medical certification or are looking to get it for the first time, Dr. Heldridge is here to help.
What Should I Expect At FAA Class II & Class III Exams?
During your exam, Dr. Heldridge will review your medical history and the medications you take. Next, he will check various aspects of your health, including your blood pressure, hearing, eyesight, lung function, and more. He will also look for signs of heart conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, or other risk factors. Dr. Heldridge may also ask questions about your mental health during this exam. The intensity of the exam can depend on the type of medical certification you are trying to obtain.
- Class II – Required for commercial, nonairline pilots (corporate pilots, crop dusters)
- Expires every 12 months
- Does not require an EKG
- Must be completed before the end of the month of expiration
- Class III – Required for students and private pilots
- Expires every 24 months
- Does not require an EKG
- Must be completed before the end of the month of expiration
Although you cannot study for an FAA medical exam, there are ways to prepare best. Some ways you can do this include:
- Get plenty of rest
- Avoid caffeine
- Refrain from meals high in sugar
- Wear your glasses or contact lenses
- Bring any necessary medical documentation
After your examination, your application may either be approved, denied, or deferred. If your application is deferred, it may be due to an issue, such as medication or a temporary problem that you can adjust, allowing you to reschedule your exam for another day and try again. You can submit an appeal with the FAA if your application is denied.
